For some time I have wanted to capture a reasonable recording of a
thunderstorm, so when one was predicted last Monday (25th June), I set up
my Telinga SSM mic and Olympus LS-100 just inside a screen door and began
recording when I heard the storm approaching.
As it happens, the storm tracked directly over the house, and I got rather
more than I had bargained for. Even though I had set the recording level
very low, still the system was totally overwhelmed by the nearest strikes
(literally just outside the window just a few tens of yards into the
woods). The storm produced wind, rain, hail, and of course thunder and
lightning.
I've put 20 minutes of the most severe part of the storm out on SoundCloud:

Warning: *If you choose to listen with headphones, beware of the first
strike at around 3:55 into the recording, along with a couple of others a
few minutes later. Even though I know what's coming, it still sends shivers
down my spine when I hear it at volume. My poor dog was a quivering wreck,
hiding under the desk.
