I find the problem of intermittent loud noises interesting, and I take note for
future reference of your decision not to try to compress it. Would you have
compressed it if it had only called once or twice?
I've been wondering about turning on the limiter on my Sony PCM M10, but
haven't had time to test it. I'm wary of using something if I don't know if it
might wreck a recording. Does it only kick in when the recording's about to be
wrecked anyway, or does it affect quieter sounds too?

Subject: [Nature Recordists] Pheasant call 7+ min
I've put a pheasant call on my webpage with a site pic:
http://www.stowford.org/recordings.htm#pheasantlong
It calls for nearly 8 minutes. I was recording at a low level as
usual but the pheasant was very close and hit the limiter a few times.
I tried compressing the recording but it sounded bad so the "normal"
birdsong is quiet.
Mind you, they haven't got their spring voices yet but I've got a
blackbird which has picked up a phone ringtone. Had me doubling back
to the house a couple of times. Hope to get it closer soon but I'm
sure it's the bird I called "Intel" last year. The two frequencies it
uses are 1500Hz amd 2500Hz.
