In fairness, the purpose of the set of 2 AA cells is to allow you to continue 
recording for a few minutes while you swap out the depleted Li-Ion battery for 
a fresh one.  The compartment for the Li-Ion battery is on the side of the 
recorder, making it easy to swap batteries while the DR-100mkII is on a tripod 
or table.  A second Tascam BP-L2 Li-Ion battery costs abut $40.
