I like the Blumlein image because it is the closest I have found to
binaural, which is my favorite technique (but not amenable to MKH
quality mics :)).

Have you considered binaural-like baffled omni techniques (many people
on the list have experimented with SASS-like enclosures for example)?

Or perhaps (depending on subject) A-B omni with widely spaced omnis?

I have heard some fantastic ambiance recordings from natural
environments recorded by Andrew Roth in Japan with very widely spaced
omnis (30' / 10m or more), with very little correlated material
between them, but a lovely sense of environment... and with the lack
of coloration from the omnis. :)
