i had a pair of the original m88s from beyer dynamic, they, and to a lesser=
extent the sennheiser md 421s are among the quietest you can get. in a dyn=
amic mic, you get low noise by having higher output. noise itself is a func=
tion of the coil resistance, which is very similar in most dynamic micropho=
nes.

even today, i think the beyer hyper cardioids as the best sounding micropho=
nes i ever recorded with.

>Beyerdynamic TGX80's - 3.2mV/PA and Dynamic, -123 dBV, self noise estimate=
d at 21dB but sounds lower due to the presence boost of nearly 8dB, so I'd =
stick my neck out and call them closer to 14dB - since they sound much quie=
ter than the Primo capsules which is why I use them as my permanent outdoor=
rig. Hence fine for static rigs, wind handling is a problem unless using t=
wo blimps.
