future recordings at the site can be replicated as to input levels,
mic system, sensitivity and freq response, etc. If acoustically
mapping out a larger site, you will want to disburse the same type of
equipment in several locations and set to record during the same time
periods.
Message: 2.
Subject: The mic locations must be chosen carefully and described as to
exact GPS location, direction and height of mic placement.
Message: 3.
Subject: To get a range of dynamic equilibrium, species richness, density,
and diversity, it is sometimes useful to record over several 24 hour
periods, under different weather conditions, and over each of the four
seasons.
There are several papers published thru Michigan State University (the
Envirosonics Department), and Purdue (Forestry Department) related to
soundscape ecology and the methodologies used. But keep in mind there
are different monitoring philosophies. Some monitor for noise in
relationship to biophony and geophony (natural biological and
geological sound sources). Some monitor for single species, only.
Whatever your choice(s), select one method and stick to it throughout
the process.
