Dear nature recordists,

Why not use the CAD e100s 3.7dB(A) hyper-cardioid large diaphragm
microphone in the field? I couldn't find anybody yet that has tried. I
couldn't get hold of data regarding physical dimensions, repeated emails
to CAD remained unanswered. But in an email, Joel Patterson, told me
"it's weight is on par with a soda can that's 3/4 full". According to
him, they also seem to be "2 1/2 inches wide, 6 inches tall, and the mic
itself is an inch thick, but with the slender ('stealth' is the way they
put it) shockmount attached, that makes for 2 inches thick. They are
unlike any other mic, not a slender cylinder but a flat, overgrown 'pack
of cigarettes' kind of look to them." I think, except for the price,
this mic should look very tempting to the members of this list using a
hyper-cardioid.

With my setup, a Sound Devices USBPre 2 via coaxial S/PDIF into a
Marantz PMD661 as a bit-bucket, this microphone should produce very
clean recordings with a very low noise floor. I thought of using a pair
of them for interviews/testimonies with very quiet people speaking with
long silences in between (the hyper-cardioid pattern should be well
suited for interviews). I'm aware that this is not exactly nature
recording as you define it here, but low self noise is an issue on this
list and is what motivates this first post.
