The birding tour leaders I know use a custom leather scabbard, molded to fi=
t the shotgun mic and its rigid foam windscreen. The scabbard is hung from=
the waist on the right, and the mic is drawn with the left hand across the=
body. This leaves your right hand free to manipulate the recorder or hold=
a pair of binoculars. The combination of scabbard and foam is enough to p=
rotect the mic while in the field as long as it's not raining hard.
