Hello Stephen...
First, let me explain that I have and use both the ME67 and a pair of the
ME66 microphones. The ME67 is a bit harder to handle without generating
handling noise for two reasons. One, it is a bit bigger and seems to be
more sensitive to handling noise primarily because it is more awkward to
handle. Secondly, it does not balance well with such a long front section=
ahead of the power module section.
I use the ME67 on a pistol grip for field work and it works quite well in
this capacity however you have to dress the mic cable securely down to the=
pistol grip and away from the microphone/pistol grip assembly as far away
from the microphone itself as cable flopping about noise (a mechanical
noise) gets transmitted back through the rigid XLR connector into the
microphone.
I use Azden SMH-1 shotgun microphone shockmount holders and with the front=
heavy ME67, I have to add a folded up piece of plastic thin white shipping=
foam about 3/4" square 1/8" thick right under the microphone at the front
of the shock mount for the microphone to sit on otherwise it bobs up and
down excessively due to the weight suspended way out in front of the
holder. Without this small piece of dense foam, the microphone bounces the=
o-ring off the bottom edge of the holder making a clunking sound in the
recording. I think if one were to double up the o-rings on the front of the=
holder, this problem would be solved however, I swap between a ME 66 at
times and find the small dense foam pad works very well.
All the handling sound problems with the ME 67 I have found to be
manageable. By the same token, the ME 66 is less trouble in this regard.
So, two things to look at, cable motion, and microphone motion in the
mount, these are what have been the most significant cause of handling
noise for me.
