Excellent job, Martyn, both with the audio and video.
I too have been wanting to record Vaux's swifts recently. I do a lot of vo=
lunteer work at a nearby wildlife refuge. The refuge was doing some remode=
ling to the refuge office, which was a small 1940's farm house - replace ro=
tting windows, leaking roof, lead-painted siding, etc. The house has a goo=
d sized chimney, which has not been used for decades. It had a cap and nee=
ded some repointing. As part of the remodel they were going to tear down t=
he chimney, but several of us convinced them to preserve it and remove the =
cap, so that it might be used by swifts and/or bats.
I have read on the web about people who have successfully attracted swifts =
to new roost sites in the UK by playing audio recordings of their calls (ht=
tp://www.swift-conservation.org/Nestboxes&Attraction.htm#How%20to%20attract=
%20Swifts%20using%20the%20Swift%20Calls%20CD). I had wanted to give that a=
try at the newly uncapped chimney, but never had a good combination of my =
availability, decent weather, and swifts at another roost in the area to ma=
ke a recording (which I would then play near the chimney at the refuge). =
The chimney was uncapped in May. However on August 11 I was there for a me=
eting and I noticed several swifts going into the chimney. Follow up count=
s showed that about a dozen swifts are using the chimney. So they found it=
all on their own!
Still I am curious if playing Vaux's swift calls near a new roost site woul=
d attract them like it apparently does with the UK swifts.
