To fill the gaps Rob identifies at nil/ low cost for a Windows system I hav=
e found the following useful:

Raven Lite for sonograms:

also for sonograms/ frequency analysis, Spectrogram 16:

and for stereo waveforms plus other functions Wavepad is very easy:
http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/index.html

Some of these can also be used on Mac.
