I've opted for the DIY route.=C2=A0 But
mainly because I consider windscreens to be a disposable item.=C2=A0
Once it gets wet, hits some dirt and other things in the field, just
how good is it? It's known that windscreens cut high frequencies by
a noticeable amount.=C2=A0 They can also impact transient response /
detail.=C2=A0 Factor in the open cell versus closed cell foam
argument and it gets interesting.

It's an ongoing progression
of compromises.=C2=A0 No real world measurements for my setup.=C2=A0
And ultimately I'll have some form of blimp / zeppelin
configuration.=C2=A0 Although one does have to consider the wind
profile if flying higher than three feet off the ground.=C2=A0 I tend
to favor in that 9' zone, less crickets (less me), more other
sounds.=C2=A0 And less proximity effect so you can run the gain a
little hotter.=C2=A0

The litmus test is to place the
material (fake fur) over your ears and notice how much degradation
you can notice from normal hearing.=C2=A0 Whatever you opt for, avoid
creases in the material as that is a vulnerability. And avoid any
slack as loose material is the equivalent of a drum within mere
centimeters of your mics. The foam helps to avoid that and creases.
But the foam itself is a compromise. And avoid any metal in
proximity of your mic elements. They are to a certain degree
magnetic and can/will be influenced.

For me at the moment, I'm going with
just two fake fur socks (per mic). Aided in part by velcro cord ties
to provide wind blockage and structure. And to keep the fur socks
from sliding off the mics in transit or while pointing towards the
ground. And perhaps make my OMNI mics a little less OMNI. So far so
good and that's a ton of money I didn't spend on a blimp(x2). Not
that I wont eventually have engineered products. But I've limited
myself to a per year budget. So probably a good five years off for me.=C2=
=A0 At $1K per year and better mics taking priority.
