<<IMHO, for accurate postprocessing and mastering a pair of near field monitors is essential. >> Aside from the fact that there is no real agreement on what constitutes near field vs mid field vs distant field, it is not only possible, but in fact common in the professional mastering industry to rely on monitors which are not in the near field. What are generally termed near field speakers are generally smallish systems which, although often good at presenting detail, are almost always shy in the bass extension department & thus of limited value for true mastering purposes.
