Coyotes at Frick Pond

Hi

As a follow up to the my last posting, I have bounced down a couple short s=
ections of a recording from an overnight deployment left near a boggy secti=
on of Frick Pond in Willowemoc Wild Forest. Night in the Catskills is incre=
dibly quiet, even during the summer months. This relative silence is broken=
only by the calls of coyotes, owls, and other nocturnal foragers. The quie=
t really reveals the limits of the microphones, the preamps, and of my own =
hearing. I had never realized how incredibly eerie and unnerving an extreme=
ly quiet woodland can be. There are things out there.

Each of the following recordings is at a slightly different gain to compens=
ate for the level of the caller. Additionally, EQ was applied to cut the hi=
ghs around 6 or so dB above about 10KHz to keep the listener from focusing =
on the hiss (which wasnt terrible). If you are interested in a raw recordin=
g as an example of noise performance of the rig (AT4022 and DR680), please =
email me off list. Overall I am very pleased with the performance of this g=
ear.

I *think* the owl is a Barred Owl, but I am not sure.
Can someone on list give a second opinion?

Here is a much longer version which requires patience and headphones. To te=
mpt you, dear reader, it begins with a mammal, probably a racoon, examining=
the recording equipment. Coyotes can be heard along with gunshots in the d=
istance. There are plenty of tiny subtle unidentified sounds in there.

More to come from this session...

Thanks!
David
