Hi Mitch--
Likely, the Marantz PMD661 will have better noise performance, but
your mics may not require it.
For matching mic input noise performance, it helps to know the
self-noise and sensitivity ratings of the mics to be used (or better
mics you plan to get eventually).
For mic to recorder matches, apply the mic info with the input noise
measurements for the recorders you've selected to this section of the
FAQ: http://tinyurl.com/2a2thas
You can also provide the list the mic info and someone will walk you
through the process.
Hopefully, others can speak to the ease, operation and reliability of
