Hi Gene,

first of all, please be patient with my primitive english...

I own a Sony D50 and I think it offers a great value for money - on the oth=
er hand I don't have any first hand experience with the little brother D10.

My setup is based on the D50, a Sound Devices MixPre preamp and different m=
ics, some PIP powered (Rode NT4 stereo, AT853 lavs), some phantom powered (=
AT3032 omnis, Rode NTG-1 shotguns). This allows me to choose the right solu=
tion depending on my needs - D50 with internal mics for quick point and sho=
ot recordings, D50 + NT4 PIP for better quality and high portability, D50+M=
ixPre and pair of mics for best quality.
What I like is this kind of flexibility, difficult to be obtained with a bu=
lkier, heavier recorder. If traveling light and "modularity" is an issue I =
would like to recommend a similar setup.

for some advice. I think I've narrowed it down to the Sony PCM-D50 and the=
 PCM-M10. Here's what I make of it:

0 or so cheaper, cons: weaker preamps and internal mics than its big brothe=
r.

ore expensive.

price point. Cons for both: lack of XLR inputs and phantom power.

unted mics at first, so I can just comfortably record my surroundings when =
I travel. I am not in the market for an interviewing device, my interest i=
s in natural environmental sounds and travel/nature recording so quality is=
the biggest consideration. So I'd like for my setup to be extensible, i.e=
. when I feel ready to invest in a really good mic for quiet nature recordi=
ngs, I'd like to be able to use the same recorder. The lack of XLR/phantom=
is worrisome in this respect. Has anyone used these with other mics for n=
ature recordings?
