Peter-
As Aaron mentioned, I do run that very rig, in my case inside a Rycote
stereo zeppelin which was designed for the much longer MKH-416/30 combo -
i.e. too long but so expensive to change I keep going with it. Here is a
pic - not a great illustration, but maybe gives you the idea. A full
windshield and furry can go over this.

I don't have an MKH-40 to compare to, but I did recently do a recording wit=
h
the 8040 running in parallel to a borrowed MKH-20, and the general characte=
r
(in free, outdoor space, almost no reflections as mics were positioned off
the edge of a bridge) was nearly indistinguishable between the two, save fo=
r
the expected directional characteristic.
So far I've been very pleased. The 8040 has also been a great dialog mic
for certain interiors, and I've gotten some VO mileage out of it.
As for windscreening, I suspect due to the upper mic being close to the sid=
e
of the windscreen, the Rycote 3 will offer less wind protection than the
larger diameter Stereo systems:

It will however be smaller to travel with.
You might investigate the Sennheiser MZW 60-1 windshield setup as well. I
believe they have a slightly larger diameter than the Rycote 3. They are
however more plasticky. Walt Knapp has put together MS stereo rigs inside
those, replacing the Sennheiser double clips with Rycote clips - pics here:
