"The HS-P82 ($4,999) from Tascam (www.tascam.com) is a high-quality, 8-track
digital field recorder for music, TV and film production.

Features include:
eight mic preamps;
XLR inputs;
eight AES/EBU inputs and outputs (DB-25 connector);
recording with timecode up to 24-bit/96kHz (8-track)
or 4-track at 24-bit/192kHz.

In addition to the eight independent channels, a stereo mix can also be
recorded for a total of 10 channels.

The unit has no moving parts, using dual Compact Flash slots for recording with
backup. The HS-P82 is housed in an aluminum chassis with a TFT color
touchscreen.

Power options for field use include
AA batteries (x10)
NP type external battery
external DC input
optional V-mount adapter for Endura batteries."

The Tascam unit will debut at the AES convention in New York City on October 9.

The big news here is the $4999 price tag, which compares favorably to units
like 8 track field units like the Sound Devices 788t. We'll have to wait and
see what the preamps sound like. Tascam certainly has a world of experience
building audio equipment.

The link above includes a photo of the unit. From the photo, it appears to me
that the 788t is lighter in weight than the HS-P82.
