The LA Times recently published an article describing the field work of Jef= f Rice and Kenning Arlitsch to capture natural sounds of the western USA fo= r the Western Soundscape Archive. The archive is managed by the J. Willard= Marriott Library of the University of Utah. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-soundscapes4-2009sep04= ,0,1447793.story According to the article, Rice approached the library with a proposal to pr= eserve natural soundscapes of the West. Arlitsch signed on, and the archive= program started in 2007. According to the archive's web site, the collection includes 90% of the Wes= t's bird species and 95% of the region's frogs and toads. The archive also= contains 24 hour spectrogram snapshots created from recordings made by the= National Park Service over almost 20 years.
