Hi Doug, Your mystery sound reminds me of a recording I made of 3 Great Gray Owlets I recorded in Wyoming. I left my Sony PCM-D1 in a tree recording all night. A small portion of the 4 hour recording is now posted on my podcast at www.7Loons.com. There is a distant river in the background. The owls are begging mice of a wearied parent.
