It's a simple resistor network that a broadcast engineer made up for
me many years ago. The engineers among us would be able to describe it
much better than I can. Here's one article I found about the subject:

http://www.uneeda-audio.com/pads/

Rob reports that he's using the "Tape Out" feed from his MP-2 directly
into the H2 Line In and then adjusting his preamp gain as needed.
That's actually a simpler solution than mine. The main reason I'm
doing it the way I am is that with a 20db pad between the XLR Line
Outs of my MixPre and the Line In of the H2, a "0" VU reading on the
MixPre shows -18dbfs on the H2. That means I can tuck the H2 into my
gear bag and simply monitor the easy-to-read LED meters on the MixPre.
