I have a R44 & think it is an amazing device for the money. But by far the
weakest feature is the Mic amps noise.
Here is the EIN (Equivalent Input noise) results I have got
R-44 (max gain 20-20kHz) -108dB , A weighted -114dB
R4 Pro, -127, A weighted -130dB
FR2 Fostex, -123dB, A weighted -127
This means the R44 will add about 11dB of extra mic amp noise to a Rode
NT1a, about 2dB to a Sennheiser 416 & about 1.8dB to the DPA 4060 mics.
very roughly ( the mic sensitivity is important too) a mic with a self noise
better than 24dB SPL will be audibly disadvantaged by the R44.
