I'm broadcasting, because I want to go and we need 20 people. This is a
great opportunity for a lower cost than one would pay for a tour guide
(birding) trip.
This natural history class I'm taking at Merritt College in Oakland has
an optional field component, second half of July. The instructor (Hank
Fabian) needs to have 20 people. Since we don't have that many yet,
people who haven't taken the class have an opportunity to go. The cost
would be around $1700 or so, assuming 20, includes lodging, van, meals,
not airfare, and I think he said they stay mostly in research stations
except the first night.
In class so far he's covered the formation of CR, trees and plants
including fungi, mammals, herps and will be going over birds, insects
and fish.
I don't know how much opportunity there might be for sound recording (at
least of longer durations), but I plan to bring my gear. I tend to do
shorter recordings anyway.
Tentative itinerary is something like:
Arrive 7/18, leave 7/31 or 8/1
San Jose, Hotel Bougainvilla
Envivo (?) museum
Tirimbina research station, including a native-chocolate-making demo
(you do and get to eat)
http://www.tirimbina.org/
river to Nicaraguan border to Tortuguero
Sea turtles on the beach (you can't just walk in there) at night, and
the sea turtle museum (went there last time)
to near Panamanian border, Cano Blanca (?)
Canoe/boat ride to where the indigenous BriBri people are and stay a
night

to Tirimbina, night frog walk
La Selva research station

Arenal (we'll see it at night), butterfly garden
Poas Volcano
Let me know if you might be interested and I'll keep you posted and/or
give Hank your contact info.
