A friend suggested that if (and only if) the plug was wired for charging, i.e. 1 & 2 ground, 3 & 4 hot, that the recorder could be put into its menu setting Power: Ext Power Function - Power On/Off unit and in that case when the external battery went down it would shut down safely, assuming there was a good battery on the back.
