You might get in touch with Bruce and Carolyn Miller that live near 
Chan Chich and frequent the lodge.  They might set you up to do some 
research.  They used to track Jaguars, but also know their birds and 
herps.  That way you could visit the place without paying the 
exhorbitant tourist rates.  

Lots of wildlife there as it is in the middle of a huge nature 
preserve owned by the richest man in Belize.  He was about to log it, 
but decide to preserve it instead is the story I heard.  Plus, its 
right in the middle of an ancient Mayan city.  One last story, when I 
went there, I got infected with a bot fly and it had to be dug out 
later when I returned to the U.S.
