The directionality also depends on the frequency. Higher frequencies
will be attenuated more effectively from off-axis directions. Even if
their pick-up pattern is not extremely narrow (compared to a parabola
for instance), they provide an significant advantage over the
omnidirectional or cardioid models used in stereo setups. Or what else
would be the reason why shotgun microphones are being manufactured?
