When the National Park Service was studying the issue of aviation
noise in the Grand Canyon in the late 90s and the first year or two of
the new century, the ambient noise levels in some box canyons off the
beaten track were measured as low as 3dB...nearly anechoic. Box
canyons are remote areas enclosed by very high (200m+) walls of sound-
absorbant sandstone. I don't know if there have been publications
related to this specific phenomenon, Gianni. But the data is sure
there. You might check with Nick Miller Harris,
Miller, Miller & Hanson in Cambridge, Mass., since HMMH was one of the
teams doing those particular measurements.
