This is balanced cable primarily used for mono.
With two twisted pairs used for each connection,
and a screen, hence 5 strands.
If you google starquad you will find info on
it's benefits.

Don't I need five-strand cable for a stereo run? I am a novice so tell
me if I'm wrong.
