I would look at the pignose amps, Roger unless someone else has a
better option? You can plug into the headphone socket and it produces
fairly good clarity.

I think the internal speakers on the marantz etc are a little weak.
You gotta love the manx shearwater, i've spent many hours with these
birds, they never cease to amaze me!
