Many mail clients and online readers use the actual header of the mail,
rather than the visible subject line. In such a case, changing the
subject line won't change the thread, only starting a new message will.
Personally, I don't mind the WAS header, since it seems to state, "while
we were talking about the car in this movie, it reminded me of another
car I saw" rather than "forget what you were saying, here's what I have
to say." One's person's netiquette is another person's affront.
Sadly, I don't think there's any way to make everyone happy with this,
sorry...
