The D1 and D50 have a 2GB file size limit. Sony reportedly designed
them this way to maintain compatibility with all audio editors. Once
the 2GB file size is reached, the recorder saves the file, and a
second file is started. I've read that the two files can be
seamlessly assembled into a single large file, but I have not tried it.

The recent Marantz recorders have no 2GB limit. Instead, you specify
the time to run until the file is saved. Units of time are as small
as one minute, or as large as 24 hours. Marantz calls this feature
Auto Track.

When the time limit is reached, the file is saved and recording will
continue. With SDHC cards up to 16GB now, and Compactflash available
in 32GB capacity, it will take a long time to fill up the memory!
