Hi Debbi -

To my unpracticed eye they look more beeish (plumper, rounder) than waspish
(thinner, pointier). They are not at all aggressive. I received no attention
from them yesterday when I had to get very close (less than five feet) to dig up
some nasty looking thistles that were about to go to seed. On the other hand,
they are extremely energetic, and that does seem somewhat unbeelike to me. The
bay tree is probably hollow - maybe it is acting as a resonating chamber. Also,
recording with the sensitivity switch in the high position may be the audio
equivalent of a magnifying glass in this case. I'll see if I can get an
authoritative ID from someone in the neighborhood.

I like bees, but that sounds really scary. Are these actually bees (not
wasps?) and do you know what kind?
