The Finger Lakes are littered with good habitats. My favorites so far have =
been in the
Ithaca area. It is well worth picking up a Finger Lakes Trails map ( the ar=
e available at at
the bike store in downtown Ithaca). I think the Cayuga Trails Club puts the=
m out. These
trails run through many good places. Most recently I was in the Connecticut=
Hill WIldlife
Management area. It is very quiet there and somewhat isolated from many sou=
nds, save
target shooters and the occasional plane. I have also camped and recorded o=
n the edge of
farmland in the area (with permission :).
Between Cayuga and Seneca lakes, is the Finger Lakes National Forest which =
I have yet to
fully explore.
I have to say though that you can drive around much of the outer rural neig=
hborhoods surrounding Ithaca, like Danby, Newfield, and Enfield and find to=
ns of good wetland areas.
I also hear that there are some lovely spaces in the Hector area though I h=
ave not yet
checked.
Thanks for the Montezuma reference, it looks very promising.
