No. There are several programs that can work with audio files larger
than 2 GB. But there are some programs that were designed for up to 2
GB only. So many manufacturers set the limit at 2 GB.
One recorder that doesn't have a 2 GB limit is the Marantz PMD620.

Today, Sony's 8 GB memory sticks are too slow to keep up with 24/96
recording. Sony may introduce 8GB versions of their fast memory stick
models in the future, but for now the 4 GB memory stick labeled "Pro
HG Duo" or the "Pro Duo (High Speed)" are the largest Sony will
recommend for the PCM-D50 and PCM-D1.

No, you choose internal or external memory before you start recording.

Sony: At 2 GB, a new file is opened and recording continues. The
first 2 GB file is saved. I don't know for sure what happens when the
2 GB file limit is reached a second time. I assume the file is saved
once again and recording stops.
Olympus: At 2 GB, recording stops and the file is saved.
