From what I can tell, Leonard's test might suggest the PCM-D50 is in
the ballpark with Hi-MD in terms of mic pre noise. I'm not sure what
pre gain he used.

I would caution using "mic-less" input noise tests to determine
whether a recorder's pre fits one needs if one plans to use mics
whose self-noise is under 12-14dB(A). These tests are probably a good
way to determine whether a recorder _could_ be within the range of
acceptability for one's proposed uses. For more confidence, hooking
up some very low noise mics and using high pre gain on the test
recorder and comparing recordings made with this and other known,
"good" recorders can be very informative. As oryoki posted,

, Digifish_music used Rode NT1-A's and compared the R-44 and a Sound
Devices Mix Pre at high gain. The test makes noise difference
perceptually clear.

For recording loud subjects like music or voice or louder settings
with mics whose self-noise rating is over 16dB(A), a recorder's mic
pre noise performance is much less critical. Rob D.
