Hello Hope,
Congratulations for receiving a grant to support your research!
Recording fledgling birds sounds like an interesting project.
Here is my recommendation for a conventional audio recording kit,
given the constraints of your budget:
recorder:
Fostex FR-2LE $600
rechargeable battery for recorder:
two 7.2V 3800 mAh RC car batteries, and charger, $50
field case:
Porta-Brace AR-FR2LE, $150
flash memory cards:
two 4 GB Compactflash cards $90
mic: Sennheiser ME-66 with K6 module $425
This is a short shotgun, ~ 15 inches in length
mic shock mount/handle: Sennheiser MZS-20-1 $350
mic wind cover: Sennheiser MZW 60-1 $320
mic cable: Mogami 3 pin XLR female to XLR male, 6 feet long $40
total cost (600 + 50 +150 + $90 + 425 + 350 +320 + 40) =3D $2,025
These are typical retail prices at a store like B&H Photo Video in New
York City. I'm sure you could reduce the price by some careful
searching for individual components online. Or you could approach a
single vendor and ask for a better price for a package deal.
Next, an unconventional recommendation.
