I suspect that "balanced" connection is AES digital audio in and out,
the professional standard.

Understood. Fortunately you have what you need. Take the coaxial
digital audio output (S/PDIF) from the DAT machine into the coaxial
input on the Roland interface.
The quality of the transfer would be the same whether you used the AES
or the S/PDIF connection, so use what fits.
