... and don't forget the flac format (that is lossless). It saves about 50% on file sizes and makes recording 24 bit samples not much more expensive (in terms of storage/memory) than 16 bit samples. The recent beta versions of audacity (1.3.x) work just fine with .flac files, I find. And, it seems, VLC (free) and Winamp handle .flac files flawlessly. I now use the format as my standard for making copies/backups. In part b because it is free/open and I have a text file of the source code that will let me uncompress the files anytime in the future.
