I've got a drum kit tripod (from conga/bongos stand)
that grips a 1 inch diameter pole.  I think the stand was
in the $70-100 range.

I also have a couple of telescoping painter's poles.
One is 4-7 feet and the other is 6-11 feet long.
They have a corse thread that screws into the handle
of a paint roller.  I used a piece of throw-away paint
gear to make an adaptor for mic stand threads.

The drum tripod grips these nicely.  Not pro-grade
boom poles, but the price was right!  I've used them
as  a boom pole once for a film shoot.  Mostly I use
them as tripod stands.
