This is very typical of overuse. Digidesign's DINR instructions suggest multiple passes with much lighter processing per pass. I've found that produces better results. Even so, the point of diminishing returns approaches very quickly. In many cases I've chosen to live with the original source noise rather than accept the artifacts of software noise reduction.
