Thanks for the helpful comments on this topic. I notice Rode makes an inline preamp the D-PowerPlug that gives a 20db boost. The noise specs could be better, but not too bad at "-116 dB A-Wt RTI." http://www.rodemic.com/?pagename=Products&product=D-PowerPlug It would be fun to experiment with nature recording using ribbon mics, but for now that is at the bottom of my list.
