I remember making a recording of the first experemental wind turbine in
the UK in about 1983 as part of a study of alternative elecrticity
generation for the Elecrticity Board. It was in Carmarthen Bay, South
Wales and had attracted a lot of local interest and complaints.
It only turned when there was a least 6mph of wind and then only slowly
which was not a problem, but as its speed increased its sound became
very anoying to people living nearby.
It was tiny compared with todays tower turbines with their massive
blades and they seem to be springing up all over the place now.
I think they look interesting and graceful in low numbers but in 'wind
farms' become rather menacing.
As for their potential for noise disturbance in wildlife recording, I
have not been bothered by them myself but I have certainly
experienced 'pylon thump when not recording. I'm sure others will have
their tales to tell...............
