Best to use a series of forked branches or metal stakes and run the  
cable 4 or 5 feet (1 - 1.5m) off the ground. Typically,
that'll work for short periods of time. Still, you need to be  
vigilant since rodents seem drawn to cables and, in particular,
the long more expensive ones. We've had pretty good and consistent  
luck with that system from the north slope of the
Arctic NWR to the SW desert.
