I would describe a recording of crickets that had the sound of city traffic
in the background, as a wildlife habitat recording. I'm sure I would find
it interesting if it had been well recorded. This is the habitat where the
crickets live.

It can also be historically important to document the mix of natural sounds
and man-made sounds, even if only to understand how much noisier our
landscape has become.

If I heard a fog horn, and some distant seabirds, I would then begin to
visualize the entire landscape, rocky cliffs, cold foggy conditions, the
sea, ships, swirling birds.

Someone recently sent me a recording of Zebra Finches drinking at a water
trough next to an old creaking windmill in outback Australia. It was a
beautiful recording and clearly described how the finches were able to take
advantage of man-made technology.
