I feel it will take a set of mics to cover the variable conditions you
will meet. No one setup is good for everything.
My set includes the modified SASS/MKH20:

This is my primary wide field closer distance stereo mic. I use it more
for ambiance than any of the others.
Several M/S setups:
http://frogrecordist.home.mindspring.com/docs/ms_setups.html
This contains several setups that vary in their ideal soundspace shape.
Between that of the SASS and the Telinga.
And the stereo Telinga
http://www.telinga.com/
The long distance specialist, or when you want the stereo ambiance
surrounding a single singer your focus on.
The SASS is a pair of the same model individual mics, the M/S are the
same brand, but different models paired up (except the pair of MKH800)
and the Telinga is a purpose built stereo mic with reflector. So, any
way works.
I do also have a few other all in one stereo mics, but they are not of
the high level of the above, though they can be good enough for some
uses. It's hard to find a all in one stereo mic of the very high quality
for nature recording ambiance. At least at anything like a affordable price=
.
Note I have tried a less expensive pair of mics in the SASS if the MKH
are too steep. See the SASS page.
It helps to understand your options before choosing. I recommend:

The book is not all inclusive, there is some bias, but has fairly good
coverage and easy technical explanations. You will understand stereo a
lot better after reading it.
