Perhaps others will suggest additional inexpensive preamps.
Does the NH600 plus external preamp make sense when you can purchase
the excellent Sony MZ-RH1 HiMD model for less than $300? Perhaps not.
It depends on the individual's budget, and plans for the machine.
The NH600 is an inexpensive choice for HiMD playback, for example.
The MZ-NH600 has another selling point: It uses a single AA cell for
power. Sony provides a rechargeable AA, but the NH600 can also use a
standard AA battery. This can be convenient when traveling to
locations where recharging batteries won't be possible.
You can also power the MZ-NH600 through the USB port. One example of
an external battery box is the Energizer Energi-To-Go with USB cable
($20).
If you plan to purchase the MZ-NH600, ask Shewas Inc about Hi-MD
discs. Sometimes they have a bargain price.
