Subject: The connection to my PC is easy and the FAT32 format makes files
easy to handle.

Subject: Each recording "take" is a unique file, and it offers a choice of
file name protocols which are very convenient.

Subject: It comes with only a small CF card, but the SanDisk 2GB card I
bought gives me plenty of space for the type of recording I do in a
day

Subject: The "record" and "standby" switches are easy to use without
looking at the machine, allowing me to focus on my parabola and
target.

Subject: The mic trim controls are very tricky, but once set the gain
control is straightforward to move. (see posts 29411 et seq and 29455
for more on this)

Subject: The hardest thing is the metering =96 the LED lights are worthless
in daylight, and you need to use the main screen which is very
visible and works well, but is in the wrong place for a field
recordist carrying it ! Hence the design of my case.

Subject: I bought a "Tamiya" =96 type RC battery and charger which gives
plenty of life. Contrary to the manual, my machine does not
automatically register and display it as such, (see my post 28710)
and two emails to Fostex support elicited no reply (a negative) but I
have muddled on and so far all seems OK.

Subject: On the plus side for Fostex, they released a Firmware update about
a month ago (mostly responding to user requests) and it worked well
and easily for me.

Subject: I have barely used the playback speaker in the field, it is small
and amplification low, but is usable. I honestly barely notice the
noisy headphone amps that others have complained about. The internal
mics serve no purpose for me.

Subject: The supplied carrying strap works OK, but the supplied bag is of
no value except for transport; but now my case makes it redundant.
All in all I have been very happy indeed with the machine and for an
amateur I feel technically well equipped with this and my Telinga 5W
mic and parabola. The rest is up to me !
