The first flash memory recorder from Marantz was the PMD670. The
PMD660 appears to use the preamp of the PMD670 in a smaller, more
power-efficient package. The 660 and 670 suffer from the same flaws
in the preamp section.
The PMD671, on the other hand, is a significant upgrade to the PMD670.
Its preamp has lower self-noise and is somewhat less susceptible to
clipping than the earlier Marantz machines. 24 bit quantization is
added (up to 24/96). And battery life is better than the original
PMD670. All in all, the PMD671 is a very good field recorder.
Most vendors offer the PMD671 for $999, the same price as the Tascam
HD-P2. The Tascam machine is a better choice at that price because it
includes better preamps, 24/192 digitizing, and time code
compatibility. The HD-P2 is somewhat larger, but a little lighter
than the PMD671.
The purchase decision becomes more difficult when the PMD671 is priced
at $700. That's the price quoted to me today by Martel Electronics
in southern California http://martelelectronics.com
The Tascam is better, but perhaps not $300 better!
