High George--
I've observed a number of recordists studying
options for a year or two when making the
upgrade(s) you describe. At this investment
level, and especially with mics, I feel the only
way to make sure one is buying the right ones is
to try the most promising candidates out in the
field.
Some dealers will set-up rent-towards-purchase
arrangements depending on their stock. It cost me
a few hundred dollars more, but after long
weekends with three mic pairs I was comfortable
with my final decision. I made field recordings
in three locations so that I could compare the
differences. Of course, you could compare the
stereo mic arrays you are considering. Stereo
imaging performance is among the most difficult
characteristics to judge so get ready to spend
some time towards this goal.
Picking a high-end recorder might be a little
less stressful. I'm very impressed with both the
SD 722 and 744T for both audio performance and
field-worthiness. I feel my MP2 provides a good
match for mic input channels 3/4 on my 744T. Rob
