Short message this time.
The trim knobs on the FR-2LE help the recorder preamp match the
microphone input. It's easy to hurt the sound of the mic by messing
with this setting. Some experimentation will be necessary to find the
sweet spot for your particular mic.
There's a trim knob for each channel, so it's easy to make adjustment
for a minor difference in mic output.
The FR-2LE preamp adds a lot of extra noise when you turn the volume
up to maximum. Keep the volume set to less than 90% of maximum for
best results. This is a common problem on less expensive gear.
The FR-2LE has a combination XLR/7mm phone jack. The XLR is only for
microphone level signals, the 7mm only for line level. The trim knobs
don't affect the line input.
As others have noted, the amp for the headphone monitor is not very
strong. Fostex says it's 15mW per channel, but that seems optimistic
to me. You'll need efficient headphones that make a good seal to your
ear to block out the ambient sound.
